About

In a National Geographic FAQ about the amount of film that gets shot on assignment, it is said that “professional photographers ‘sketch’ with the camera”. They use this to explain both the high number of pictures shot (400+ rolls per story) and the process by which photographers approach their subjects.

I’m not a professional photographer by trade, and I’ve never been published in National Geographic. Nonetheless, that description immediately struck me because it felt like home: I think like that when I have the camera. Half or more of the pictures I take are taken on the way to another picture, as it were. Sometimes the sketches are more interesting than where I end up.

That approach to seeing the world through the camera is why I call this photoblog “sketches”.

The photoblog will contain some pictures that I consider portfolio images, but it’s also a way to share some work that doesn’t fit into the main site. Some of those pictures will work and some won’t. Some will simply be what happens as I sketch with the camera. I’d love to hear thoughts on all of them. I have some ideas about what makes for a good photograph, but I honestly don’t know what works for you in particular. For myself, I am just trying to share pictures in a different way and in the process trying to encourage myself to keep creating new work.
